Embracing Discomfort: How Discipline Drives High Performance Success with Anthony Mink

In a world optimized for comfort and convenience, true high performance often requires moving in the opposite direction. On a recent episode of my podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with Anthony Mink, founder of Live Bearded and host of the "Entitled to Nothing" podcast. Anthony's journey from humble beginnings in a small Oregon logging town to building a multi-million dollar e-commerce brand offers powerful insights into what drives exceptional achievement.

Anthony's definition of high performance cuts through the noise: "It's doing what you know you need to do regardless of how you feel." This simple yet profound perspective has guided him through building a business that has generated over $50 million in sales, traveling to more than 40 countries, and developing the mental fortitude to consistently push beyond comfort.

Let's explore the core elements of Anthony's high-performance philosophy and discover how intentionally seeking discomfort might be the key to unlocking your own potential.

The Foundation of High Performance: Discipline Over Motivation

For Anthony, high performance isn't about feeling motivated or inspired—it's about showing up consistently regardless of emotional state.

"I don't care how I feel. I don't care whether I'm sick, tired, motivated, sad, depressed... whatever emotional state I'm in, I do what I said I was going to do. If I can follow through and have that level of discipline, to me, that is the foundation of what becomes a high-performance individual."

This perspective challenges the common belief that we need to feel good to perform well. Instead, Anthony suggests that true performance comes from developing the discipline to act despite our feelings—a skill that compounds over time and builds the foundation for success across all areas of life.

Building Self-Trust Through Daily Discipline

One of Anthony's most valuable insights is the connection between discipline and confidence. As he explains:

"I struggled with confidence a lot and I was almost set free when I realized that confidence is based off of the root word in Latin of 'fide' and that means 'with trust.' When I realized confidence just meant I trusted myself... it made it very easy. What do I have to do to trust myself? Well, I have to do what the f*** I said I was going to do."

This perspective transforms confidence from an abstract quality into a concrete outcome of consistent action. By keeping promises to yourself—whether it's getting up at 4 AM, completing your ice bath, or tracking your macros—you develop the self-trust that becomes the foundation for greater achievements.

Transforming Pain into Purpose: The Growth Mindset

Anthony's journey began with using pain as motivation. Growing up with an abusive, alcoholic father who repeatedly told him he was "worthless," Anthony developed a chip on his shoulder that fueled his early drive.

"My Dad would get drunk and then he would come after me and tell me how useless and worthless I was... After a while, I started to believe it, but the only thing that kept me going was a willingness to never quit."

This early adversity taught Anthony a crucial lesson that would shape his approach to business and life: resilience in the face of difficulty creates capacity for growth.

The Quality-of-Life Equation

Perhaps the most powerful concept Anthony shared comes from his mentor Tony Robbins:

"The quality of your life is in direct proportion to your ability to be uncertain or uncomfortable. The more uncertain you can be in your life, the more growth and evolution you can experience."

This equation offers a dramatically different perspective from conventional wisdom. Rather than seeking comfort and predictability, high performers intentionally pursue discomfort as the path to growth. As Anthony explains:

"Everything that stretches us beyond our comfort zone grows us... I realized that it was that very same pain and difficulty that actually creates the circumstances to really grow and evolve."

Building a Life of Intentional Discomfort

Moving beyond theory, Anthony shared specific practices he uses to cultivate discipline and embrace discomfort:

Daily Practices for Building Discipline

  1. Morning ice baths: "I bought an ice bath, put it on my patio, and said I will do that thing every day... There's not a day that goes by that it gets funner or easier—it doesn't suck."
  2. Early morning routine: "4:00 AM... I tried to get up at 4:00 AM for years and could never do it and just eventually developed the discipline to go to bed early enough to do it."
  3. Macro tracking: "I track my macros not because I'm trying to be a specific diet, but it's a behavior or discipline that is not convenient."

The power of these practices isn't in their specific nature but in the discipline they develop. As Anthony explains:

"If I do the most difficult or the thing that I don't want to do first thing in the morning, after that's done, I'm like, 'Okay, what else do I not want to do that I can just go attack full force?'"

Creating a Business That Serves Your Life

Beyond personal discipline, Anthony shared how he structured his business to support his desired lifestyle rather than letting his business dictate his life:

"I didn't build a business to make money. I built a business for a lifestyle. My end goal was locational freedom... I figured if I could work when I want and where I want, I didn't actually care about the money."

This clarity allowed him to narrow his focus to only business models that would facilitate his desired lifestyle—a powerful example of beginning with the end in mind.

The Edge That Drives Success

Reflecting on the characteristics of high performers, Anthony noted that they all share a certain edge—a willingness to push boundaries and take things personally. This edge isn't always comfortable:

"All of the people that I admire, they all have a pretty sizable edge... They all have a very, very sharp edge and they take things personally. And honestly, it's not the most peaceful or comfortable life."

This perspective offers a reality check for those romanticizing high achievement without understanding the mental toll it often requires. As Anthony shares from Elon Musk's experience:

"There's this clip going around of Elon... and he's like, 'I don't think anybody would want to be me. I don't think you guys realize, like, it feels like I'm eating glass most days... it's not a fun existence.'"

Conclusion: The Advantage of Being a Little Bit Savage

In our conversation, Anthony highlighted a profound truth about our current era: we live in a time of unprecedented comfort and convenience—a condition that has created widespread "laziness, arrogance, and weakness." In this environment, those willing to voluntarily embrace discomfort gain a tremendous advantage:

"Life isn't naturally hard; it's hard by choice. Through evolution, existence was hard, but we're at a point right now of so much abundance that we actually have to seek that out. The ones that seek out the growth over the comfort, they have a substantial advantage in the world we live in."

This perspective offers both a challenge and an opportunity. By intentionally embracing discomfort, developing rigorous discipline, and building the resilience to keep going when others quit, you position yourself for exceptional achievement in any field.

As Anthony succinctly puts it: "If you're a little bit of a savage, you can run circles around everybody else."
