From $135K in Debt to a Multi-Seven-Figure Exit

Beate Chelette was a hundred and thirty five thousand dollars in debt, a single mother, borrowing money to pay the interest on money she had already borrowed.

She sold that business to Bill Gates. Today she is known as the Growth Architect and is the founder of the Women's Code, and she works with founders on building a business model that supports the mission rather than swallowing it.

THE POINT WHERE IT WAS OVER

She does not soften the low point.

A lawsuit had settled and cleared some of the debt, but she made nothing on it. She was building the stock photography syndication and, in her words, running up a spiral staircase in high heels as fast as she could. Then the number caught her. A hundred and thirty five thousand in debt, a daughter to raise, and borrowing to service the borrowing.

That is not a story about grit as a personality trait. It is what happens right before someone changes the model.

THE MODEL COMES BEFORE THE TACTICS

This is where her approach differs from most growth advice.

Her main focus is not tactics. Before touching funnels, sales or team, she builds the model that is aligned with the founder's life, their belief system and their vision. The test is simple. It cannot blow up your family, your relationships or your health.

Only after that does the work move to which tactics get you there. Most people run it in the opposite order, pick up the tactics first, and then wonder why success cost them everything around it.

THE SKILL SHE ALMOST MISSED

She describes her real strength as listening to something and immediately turning it into steps. Somebody talks, and she can put it into three steps or five steps without effort.

For years she assumed everyone could do that. Most people cannot. Most can get the plane to thirty thousand feet and then cannot decide where to land, because every option is still open and none of them is chosen.

Her point about landing is the useful part. Choosing one destination does not delete the others. The plane goes to Las Vegas, and then it goes somewhere else, and then somewhere after that. But if you will not land anywhere, you never get to the next place either.

SHE WAS ALWAYS BUILDING SOMETHING

The entrepreneur showed up early. She made pins at school and sold them to classmates. She became a poster reseller and worked out that when she ordered for all her friends the company sometimes shipped extras, which she sold at a profit.

Small, but the instinct is the same one that rebuilt a business out of six figures of debt.

THE TAKEAWAY

If the business is working and your life is not, the tactics are not the problem. Rebuild the model so the two stop competing, then pick the tactics that serve it.
